Chanel: Introducing the new J12

After nearly 20 years, Chanel’s most celebrated and iconic watch has undergone several major updates in 2019 to (excuse the pun) keep up. First unveiled at Basel World in March 2019, almost 70% of its internal components have been changed, while on the outside its overall identity and shape have remained relatively intact, save for several minute adjustments made to the bezel, the bracelet and watch face.

Created in 2000 by Jacques Helleu, theJ12′The timely update was carried out by Arnaud Chastaingt, the current director ofChanel watch creation studioin Paris, before its 20th anniversary next year. On one side, the 38mm case made of high-strength ceramic features a sapphire crystal caseback displaying the uniqueGauge 12.1manufacture movement self-winding inside. This not only allowsJ12To make it less likely to cause allergic reactions (no more contact with stainless steel), having a visible case back that shows its inner workings is a particularly important feature in a fine watch in today’s age.

Chanel proudly displays theKenisimanufactured movement (it acquired a 20% stake in the Swiss manufacturer earlier in the year), one that comes with aCOSCCertification backed with a 5-year warranty. Another advantage? TheJ12It now comes with a 70-hour power reserve compared to 42 hours on the previous model, so you don’t have to worry about “wake it up” on Monday if you switch to another watch over the weekend.

Various other improvements include the redesign of the bezel, one that comes with 40 notches instead of the typical 30, giving it a sleek and sophisticated finish all around. The bracelet has also been updated, with longer, flatter ceramic links to give it a slimmer balance. And speaking of the dial, it’s also slightly larger thanks to the smaller crown, giving it a better overall visual balance. On closer inspection, theArabicthe hour numerals are slightly thinner and are fully ceramic to improve readability on the dial.

TheJ12is a watch that any gender can wear equally well, available inBlackorWhite, which are classic colors that you can’t go wrong with. There was no design overhaul or unnecessary addition of elements; just a change to a far superior movement, with refined settings to make the watch look even better.
